Bali 2016

Taken from my early morning practice at my home in the rice fields near Ubud, Bali in 2016.

The videos are shot between 3 am and 5 am, which is the time the I usually practice before teaching Mysore style classes in town. As usual, the clips are unedited and unrehearsed. They are actual cuts from real practice sessions. Imperfections are not edited out, so that they give an accurate portrayal of what real, every day practice is actually like.

As I usually practice in a room with very low light, I turned on more lights on the days we were filming, and I also increased the overall brightness of each video clip using Windows Movie Maker. They are still somewhat dark, but I feel this helps to characterize the introspective and meditative mood of my solitary practice sessions at home.

Many of the clips include extensive write ups about the postures. You can read these by clicking “show more” at the bottom of the description for each clip on youtube.

Istanbul 2013

These are clips from my early morning practice sessions in Istanbul in spring 2013.

As the clips are unedited and taken from real full series practices, they portray the various stiffnesses and imbalances which are inevitable in most practices. These practices were usually between 4 and 6 am, before teaching. Special thanks to Susan Su for getting up early to film me before her practice!

I was using the Full Vinyasa method at the time. When my teacher Rolf split my 3rd and 4th series practice into two separate practices in January 2013, he suggested using Full Vinyasa as a way to help me adapt to 4th series as a stand-alone practice. I did this for about 6 months and included Full Vinyasa in my intermediate and 3rd series practices as well, to keep the energy consistent.
